We will NOT be able to host the Bear Springs Trap XC on Sunday, May 1. I’m sorry for the news!
We delayed opening up registration because we wanted to first gauge progress on trail maintenance–and that was a good call. We simply won’t be able to clear the outer section of the course–the Clear Creek Crossing to Rim Rock loop–before May 1. Petr Kakes and his Hurricane Racing crew have already removed hundreds of downed trees from the course–as well as from the access roads themselves! It’s heavy, slow work, and it’s been made worse by last week’s snowstorm and this week’s continued snowfall and cold, overnight temperatures. The new snow isn’t melting, and now it’s freezing what snow remained from earlier this winter.
Historically, the all-volunteer, annual trail maintenance in preparation for the Bear Springs Trap XC is the ONLY maintenance these trails receive each year. We simply weren’t given enough time this year to get it done. That said, we’re still very thankful to the USFS for the late permission to do the work. These trails haven’t been used for close to three calendar years, and so we’re excited to get them open for this year! Plus, this year’s work will make next year’s feel easy. It’s a labor of love.
Thank you for your patience and understanding! -Erik Tonkin
